Meet RIO - Paws Behind Bars prison dog trained
RIO is an 18-month-old Australian Shepherd mix who weighs 60 lbs. He came into a local shelter as a stray and proved to have too much energy for not one, but two homes. He is a wonderful dog without any aggression tendencies; all he needs is direction, boundaries, and a basic foundation in obedience, and he'll be, not a good dog, but a great dog!
So we're going to give him what he needs - an inmate all his own for a couple of months. In our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program, he'll receive obedience training. He'll also know what it's like to be properly exercised - physically and mentally (Aussie's are smart and respond well if they have a task.)
When he graduates, his perfect home will be an active one with owners who are home more often than not. Another young dog in the home would be fine as would older children. A fenced-in yard is also desired as leash walking is not sufficient for his energy level.
PLEASE NOTE: If you’re interested in adopting, our process begins with the submission of our online application, or email us if you submitted an application within the last six months. We review and schedule meet and greets (with approved applicants only) based on the order received.
Please see our FAQ page for the answers to any other questions you might have regarding the adoption process.
