Meet ORION - Paws Behind Bars Trained
ORION is a 1-year-old male mixed breed (Chow/Husky) who weighs 57 lbs. All we can say is WOW! The dog adopted out from our program as a 12-week-old puppy. Almost a year later, we got him back - with some emerging, undesirable behaviors. Orion is exactly the kind of dog our Paws Behind Bars program is equipped to help, and at only a year old, there was nothing the inmates couldn't fix.
ORION is still in the program and WOW! The progress is nothing short of remarkable. His bad habits? Reactive in his crate and wary of strangers. The food possession and resource guarding that were reported have never been seen. ORION's inmate also has another adult dog in his cell, Reesie. ORION has had ample opportunity to show us his "bad boy" stuff, but has not.
The prison experiences delivers boundaries and structure. The dogs are rewarded for everything they do correctly. All of Orion's anger has been replaced with a desire to please, and "Just tell me what you want me to do next." (This is where basic commands are invaluable.) His little nubbins of a tail and wiggly backend are proof in the pudding that he's happy being happy. We all feel he's ready to get out there and try family life again.
His best home will have another younger dog to play with. It should have a fenced yard; exercise goes a long way toward burning energy. He's best suited for older children. And lastly, if boundaries and structure are the key to his success, he needs a home that will give him that. He is definitely not a good fit for a home that might need to leave him in a crate while at work all day.
